Fringed by the sparkling Bay of Biscay, southwest France is the ideal place for families, couples and groups to enjoy a holiday. With the Pyrenees at its base along the Spanish border, and full of beautiful cities such as Bordeaux, there is a holiday in southwest France for everyone. The marshy areas are surrounded by national parks which preserve the many types of wildlife, flora and fauna that call the area home, and the long sandy beaches are the ideal place to relax, while there are also water sports and plenty of beautiful cultural towns just waiting to be explored.

Summer France offers beautiful accommodation in southwest France, in the town of Aquitaine. Here visitors will find long stretches of sand surrounded by a pretty town filled with traditional French architecture, restaurants serving delicious dishes and fields growing fresh local produce and delicious wine. The Residence les Sagaliers offers self-catered accommodation, with a shared outdoor swimming pool for all guests, cosy interiors and exteriors which match the stunning surroundings. Alternatively, our Residence la Marquisie in Trebas les bains, offers clean and modern interiors with beautiful views out over the surrounding landscape.

Explore on dry land

Those wanting to explore will find plenty on offer in southwest France. The towns of Biarritz and Albi are steeped in history, and are ideal for those wanting to soak in some of the culture of the area. Albi is full of traditional buildings, with restaurants, bars and cafés to explore, not to mention stunning views over the landscape from the very top. Biarritz has evolved from a small fishing town into a glamorous holiday destination, and offers a pretty lighthouse, quiet parks and interesting architecture. The largest city in southwest France, and the capital of the Aquitaine region, Bordeaux is the ideal place for a day trip or longer. Visitors will find incredible examples of Gothic architecture, one of the highest concentrations of Michelin starred restaurants of any city in the world, and some fantastic shopping. But it isn't only about spending money, Bordeaux is home to some incredible markets selling local produce for a bargain, and there's so much to do for free on foot.

Southwest France is home to a number of national parks, as well as beautiful farmed land and undulating hills which stretch into the horizon. Best known for its vineyards visitors can rent bicycles and visit the many chateaux, tasting delicious samples along the way. Alternatively, there are plenty of coastal cycle paths to explore, as well as opportunities for walkers and keen hikers to make the most of the area. Those travelling with the family will find more gentle walks as well, with pretty spots ideal for a picnic full of French goodies. Animal lovers can also enjoy horse riding treks across the landscape, with riding schools where helpful guides will find the right horse for you.

Dip in your toes

One of the main attractions in Southwest France is its long golden stretches of sand. Visitors can enjoy the stunning landscapes along the coastal paths, or simply rent a sun bed and parasol for the day. Wander through the sand dunes or marshes that fringe many of the beaches and admire the unique flora and fauna, or hit the waves and try surfing. One of the best places in Europe for surfing, this is the ideal place for seasoned experts as well as those wanting to learn. Some of the best beaches to explore are Soulac Sur Mer, which offers huge expanses of sands which rarely get crowded, Carcans which is backed by sand dunes and remains warm and sunny throughout the season and Cap Ferret where visitors can wander along the pier and admire the many fishing boats. Alternatively, there are plenty of water sports to enjoy, including wind surfing, sailing and pedalo rides for families.

For practising their swing, guests can make the most of the many golf courses in southwest France. With courses ranging from the expensive with beautiful chateaux, to stunning panoramic views out over the sea, there are plenty to choose from. Alternatively, head out to sea on a fishing trip and enjoy delicious fresh fish. Those wanting to explore the Pyrenees will find clear lakes and shaded forests, as well as snow-capped mountain peaks.

Southwest France is home to delicious dishes made using ingredients from the local farms. Most of the restaurants serve up beautifully presented plates of food, with fine wines being a tradition. The further south you are the more Spanish influences can be found in the dishes, with small tapas portions served for those who enjoy a taste of everything. Some of the traditional dishes in the area include crêpes, mussels and truffles. Most of the dishes are served with melt in the mouth meat, including duck, beef, rabbit and more, while along the coastline there are plenty of restaurants serving delicious fish options.

Bordeaux is the place to go for fantastic restaurants, with some of the top names including Dan, which serves Eastern and French fusion options, La Maison du Pata Negra which offers tapas options, including plenty of potatoes and pork, Le Pavillon des Boulevards where the presentation is second to none and Tante Charlotte which offers fantastic value for money. For some of the world's best cuisine Les Pres d'Eugénie can be found in Eugénie les Bains and is where you'll find classic French options. Mariottat is located in Agen, and can be found in a stunning French building, serving up fresh ingredients in interesting combinations. Jean des Sables is in Hossegor and offers incredible views over the Atlantic Ocean, while most of the towns and villages offer restaurants serving delicious French cuisine.

Southwest France tends to be quiet for nightlife, with Bordeaux offering the liveliest options. Here visitors can enjoy bars and restaurants which stay open late, before heading to one of the clubs nearby. Le Caillou au Jardin Botanique is pricey but with a relaxed atmosphere, located in the botanic garden, while L'Ice Room is chic and cosmopolitan with interesting cocktail concoctions on offer. Alternatively, Pub Saint Aubin is more down to earth, while L'I.Boat is found on a boat and has a good dance floor.

Childcare facilities

Most of the tourist boards in southwest France offer a list of qualified and reliable babysitters and nannies. There are also summer schools in the area, and some of the hotels will provide kids' clubs and well as babysitters to keep younger guests entertained.

Parking

Larger cities such as Bordeaux have limited free parking spaces available, although there are public car parks. Both of Summer France' southwest France properties offer guests free parking onsite.
