Location
The south of France offers blissful summer holidays enriched by glorious sunshine and plenty to keep everyone entertained, plus chilly winter breaks populated with Christmas markets and warming local food and drink. Stretching from the Italian to the Spanish borders either side, the south of France consists of two regions: Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to the east and Languedoc Roussillon to the west, with the Rhone dividing the two regions.
The south of France offers a huge variety, from soft sandy beaches and bays, peaceful traditional villages, famous resorts, and rocky coastline, to the soaring altitudes of the Alps and the Pyrenees. Long summer days stretch on until September and October, warming the clear water of the Mediterranean.
Summer France offers holiday villas, apartments, cottages and hotels sleeping from two to eight people. Spacious accommodation to suit everybody, from a fun-packed family holiday, to a romantic break, or a group escape from the rat race. Choose from a range of stunning south of France destinations from Montpellier, to Cannes Mandelieu, L'Isle sur la Sorgue and more.
The south of France is perhaps best known for its stunning beaches, with miles of sandy shores stretching along the coast. There's an endless supply of activities, from sailing and surfing, to simply sun-bathing and swimming. There are plenty of easily-accessible gently sloping beaches, offering safe fun for families and young children. The clear water of the south of France also lends itself to snorkelling and scuba diving, with an array of underwater wildlife to explore, and there are hidden beaches tucked away in nooks along the coastline, waiting to be discovered.
Aside from revelling on the beaches, the south of France offers a wealth of culture and history to discover. A plethora of famous artists originate from the south of France, and the region retains a rich culture, including castles dating back to medieval times, vines stretching over sun-kissed hills, and dynamic cities such as Montpellier.
Arles is a beautiful historic town filled with Roman heritage. Visit the forum and amphitheatre, not to mention tiny winding streets, just asking to be explored and photographed. Arles is also where Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin were based, and painted some of their best known masterpieces.
Avignon is another gorgeous town peppered with history. The town holds a cathedral, the Palais des Papes (the Pope's palace), and the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet bridge (just think Sur le pont, d'Avignon).
For explorers, there's beautiful hiking and biking aplenty in the South of France, from the rugged rocky outcrops of the Languedoc region to the pretty rural villages in Provence. For something a little more challenging, why not take to the Alpine heights of the Alps or the feet of the Pyrenees.
Choose from coastal walks, with paths along the seafront, hinterland trails, wandering from village to village through lavender fields, and mountain hikes, with gorgeously cool lakes as the reward for a difficult walk.
The mountain rivers also offer ample opportunity for white water sports such as canoeing and kayaking, or simply put out a line with a guide and enjoy a spot of fishing. For something a little livelier, a lot of the towns offer festivals, with live music, delicious food and stalls to browse.
Mediterranean passion
Local food and drink is superb in the south of France. Outside of the main touristy resorts, food and drink is reasonably priced, with a passion for traditional Mediterranean ingredients. There are exquisite local ingredients such as virgin olive oil, lamb grazed on salt marshes, heady peaches and apricots, while Marseille has the accolade of being the seafood capital of the region, serving rich bouillabaisse and the freshest fish served simply.
Local produce
On certain weekdays and weekends, open markets abound, with local farmers and producers selling delicious fresh bread, pungent dried herbs and colourful fruit and vegetables. Markets provide the perfect ingredients to cook up a French feast in self-catered accommodation. For eating out, the south of France has an abundance of restaurants to choose from. From Michelin-starred fine dining to casual brasserie suppers with crusty baguette and local wine try the locally-made Picpoul-de-pinet with a white fish and beans dish for true south of France eating.
Whether you're after traditional mountain villages, sleepy seaside towns or bustling cities, the south of France has the perfect place for every holiday. Summer France offers a range of holiday accommodation throughout the region, from cosy hotel rooms to modern apartments and spacious villas.
